Tap To Call

With terrorist activities continuing to make headlines around the world, many experts are concerned about threats that hit much closer to home. America’s chemical plants may be at risk for devastating terrorist attacks that could potentially pose risks to millions of people across the nation. Taking steps to increase security in chemical facilities is essential to prevent these destructive events and to ensure the safety of workers, customers and members of the public. Simply installing Houston industrial security camera systems can be a good first step toward protecting these areas from unauthorized entry.

A Continuing Threat to Public Safety

Refineries and chemical plants are attractive targets for terrorist groups because of the potential for widespread damage and contamination many of these facilities represent. These facilities are required to report information regarding the types of chemicals stored or manufactured on their sites and the radius of the area that would be seriously affected by a spill or release of those chemicals. A report released in 2015 by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, however, found that 44 percent of high-risk facilities provided incorrect data on the size of this area to government officials. This inaccurate information could prove costly if a terrorist attack or accidental leak should occur.

Serious Risks to Surrounding Areas

While the U.S. has been fortunate in avoiding terrorist attacks on chemical plants so far, the devastation possible from these events can be illustrated by looking at the history of accidents in the chemical and oil refining industry:

  • The 1984 gas leak in Bhopal, India, that claimed the lives of 3,787 people and caused injuries to more than 550,000 more is widely regarded as the worst industrial disaster ever.
  • In 2005, an explosion and fire at the Texas City BP oil refinery took the lives of 15 people and injured at least 180 others.
  • A 2014 leak of methyl mercaptan at the E.I. du Pont de Nemours plant in La Porte, Texas, killed four employees.

While these events were accidental, the potential for serious and intentional harm is obvious. Taking steps to secure chemical plants and refineries is essential to prevent terrorist attacks that could devastate the areas surrounding these facilities.
